‘t Gagel Farm‘s transition to regenerative farming

Climate Farmer since
2021

Regenerative from beginning

Investment costs

  • Access to Land and buildings (4.3mio), -The biggest barrier to transition – speculative market-driven
  • Storage, Processing Infrastructure
  • Machinery
  • Make existing infrastructure workable

Practices

synthetic-fertilizers_0,75 pt — green

Agroforestry
❍ Agroforestry

Challenges so far
Personal transformation (change of farm lands)

Outcomes so far

  • Big changes in diversity through a changed mowing regime
  • The soil was very stinking (ammoniac), now no smell anymore
  • Mice and birds are coming back
  • Compaction is massively improving through biodiversity, like moles
  • Water infiltration and soil structure are improving

Learnings of your journey

  • Start small, everything takes more labor than you initially think
  • Focus on planning and prioritizing
  • Learning curves are slow because you learn only once a year of your doings
  • Get a lot of experience, expose yourself to your endurance

“We need a new culture in which we celebrate reciprocity of all life”

— The reason why ‘t Gagel decided to become a training farm

Future ambitions

Agroforestry

Create a radical new culture: A new way of thinking and working by teaching and providing knowledge
